Behind the Bots

This week on the podcast, we’re catching up with BattleBots announcer Kenny Florian! Kenny is a mixed martial artist who fought in the UFC before switching careers and following his true passion: Watching very expensive robots violently disassemble their opponents. We’ll ask Kenny how he preps for a match, what he’s looking for, and his favorite fight of all time.

This week on the podcast, we’re interviewing HotLeafJuice captain and SawBlaze team member Lucy Du! Lucy is a mechanical engineer who got her bachelors and masters degrees at MIT, and went to work for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory before returning to MIT to earn her PhD. Her research currently focuses on the field of Biomechatronics, which studies ways to merge people with machines.

Combat robotics fans know Lucy for HotLeafJuice, a 12-pound undercutter that she built last year and dominated with at Norwalk Havoc, taking home two first-place finishes in qualifiers before winning the Golden Brett and $12-thousand dollars cash at the Norwalk Havoc Finals in December. She’s competed on every season of BattleBots to date — starting with the legendary Team JACD in 2015, and helping launch Team SawBlaze the following year

This week on the podcast, we’re catching up with MadCatter driver Calvin Iba! Diehard combat robotics fans know Calvin for Lynx, the world’s most competitive beetleweight, which has taken home nearly a dozen first-place finishes at competitions across the U.S. In December, Calvin took home a Golden Brett and $10,000 cash after going undefeated at the Norwalk Havoc World Championships, with decisive victories over Vespula, Project LiftOff, Eruption, Silent Spring, and Silent Spring again. Outside of combat robotics, he’s a talented engineer and super good human — we really liked this interview, and we think you will too.

This week on the podcast, we’re dragging ourselves out of our collective holiday comas to bring you a pre-pre-BattleBots mini episode, covering the December Finals at Norwalk Havoc, Luke officially joining a BattleBots team, and a case of mistaken identity.

This week on the podcast, we’re catching up with Ralf Schneider, captain of the European rookie multibot Jäger. The team faced big challenges this season — Ralf’s UK teammates were prevented from traveling to the U.S. due to COVID restrictions, which meant he had to lean on the help of other teams to get into the BattleBox. We learn more about his design ethos, and his journey to the 2021 season of BattleBots (returning Jan. 6 on Discovery Channel!)
